Buffalo Grove

Known for its top-rated schools, excellent park district and bountiful green space, Buffalo Grove offers an ideal place to make home.

Schools

Schools for Buffalo Grove residents are highly rated from first grade through high school. Adlai E. Stevenson High School’s ACT scores get higher every year, and Buffalo Grove High School is right up there. Their excellence contributes to Buffalo Grove having one of the most stable real estate markets in the area.

Libraries

The Indian Trails Library District in Wheeling and the Vernon Area Public Library in Lincolnshire serve residents of Buffalo Grove.

Park District

The excellent park district is also a key draw to the area. Organized sports through the park district include softball, volleyball, baseball, football, basketball, soccer and martial arts, lacrosse, skating, hockey, aquatics and more.

Other organizations also offer sports for residents in football, cheerleading and soccer. Plus the park district maintains 60 park sites and several facilities throughout the community.

An abundance of green space with a quarter of the village's land devoted to nature preserves and parks adds to the village's ambience. Mike Rylko Community Park is the largest park in the village boasting 6.5 acres, and the Buffalo Creek Forest Preserve with more than 400 acres is primarily in Buffalo Grove.

Housing

Although many subdivisions offer quiet neighborhoods with tree-lined streets and well-tended homes, the community offers a full spectrum of housing from 40-year-old homes to brand new construction.

Residential development began in the late 1950s when local builder Al Frank obtained 100 acres of farmland and built a number of ranch homes. These after-war houses in Cook County are known as Old Buffalo Grove.

Newer homes feature luxury condos, townhouses and single-family homes. Farther north, you will see larger, newer homes in Lake County.

Shopping and Dining

The community's central location offers shopping in every direction. Local shopping abounds at several shopping areas, and major malls include nearby Deer Park Town Center with shopping, restaurants and a movie theater tucked behind the mall. Randhurst Village in Mount Prospect and Hawthorne Mall in Vernon Hills are also nice places to shop and a short drive away.

Nestled in a historic village, nearby Long Grove is home to several shops, restaurants and art galleries and offers a quaint, rural atmosphere.

Buffalo Grove offers several dining options from Lou Malnati's Pizzeria for Chicago-style, deep-dish pizza to the new Countyline Tavern and many excellent American and ethnic restaurants.

Location and Transportation

Situated in Cook and Lake counties, Buffalo Grove is located within 20 miles of the headquarters of several big industries, including several drug companies, which also contributes to the stable real estate market.

The Prairie View and Buffalo Grove Metra train stations offer commuters a convenient way to get into the city and plenty of parking. Drivers have easy access to I-294 and I-90 for a trip downtown.

Recreation

The village's open space includes two village-operated golf courses, Buffalo Grove Golf Club adjacent to village hall and The Arboretum Club on Half Day Road on the side of a former tree farm with a backdrop of scenic subdivisions.

There is a horseback riding off Gilmer Road, which is not in Buffalo Grove, but very close for kids who want to take lessons.

Arts and Culture

Buffalo Grove also has a rich arts and cultural scene that includes the Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band that started in 2001, the BG singers, a community chorus, and a theater for children and young adults through the park district.

Lincolnshire's Marriott Theatre features Chicago area regional theater and presents five musicals each year. The Metropolis Performing Arts Centre in Arlington Heights presents quality local theater. Each offers performances for children.
