The Vernon Hills public schools are top notch, consistently rated among the highest in the U.S. Schools are new, low pupil to teacher ratio, with many after school activities.
School District 128 is composed of Vernon Hills High School and Libertyville High School. Vernon Hills High School is a blue ribbon of excellence school and was also ranked 21st statewide by U.S. News & World Report earning them a Silver Medal of Excellence. They have a total enrollment of 1,316 students and 14:1 student-teacher ratio.
Libraries
The Vernon Area Public Library serves approximately 42,900 people over 29 square miles. The library serves all or parts of Buffalo Grove, Lincolnshire, Long Grove, Vernon Hills, Prairie View, Riverwoods, and portions of unincorporated Vernon and Ela townships.
Housing
This village showcases numerous beautiful neighborhoods known for their clean and beautiful parks, walker-friendliness, and easy accessibility to shopping and dining.
Centennial Crossing includes 191 detached single-family homes with public parks and pedestrian trails. This neighborhood features floor plans ranging from 2,402 to 3,703 square feet of living space. The street elevation reflects historic Midwestern vernacular and features alley-loaded lots with attached or detached garages. Centennial Crossing is located West of Milwaukee Avenue, off of Route 45.
Gregg's Landing is single family and townhome neighborhood built in the late 1990's and early 2000's. The neighborhood surrounds White Deer Run Golf Course: 240 acres of rolling terrain and picturesque lakes. Gregg's Landing is located west of Milwaukee Avenue off of Gregg's Parkway.
Shopping and Dining
The Village of Vernon Hills also offers an abundance of restaurants and stores including Westfield Hawthorn Mall. Some restaurants include Portillo's, Real Urban Barbecue, and Tom and Eddie's.
Along with a variety of American fare, favorite ethnic eateries include Nirvana Middle-Eastern cuisine, Aroma Indian cuisine, Green Basil Thai, and two Japanese favorites, Tsukasa of Tokyo and Sushi Kushi San3.
Hawthorn Mall, originally known as Westfield Mall, experienced new ownership in January 2016. The new owners explained that no changes will be made at the moment, which is understandable considering the mall underwent a $50 million renovation and expansion starting in early 2014. This included the addition of a Dave & Busters in 2014. A 12-screen AMC movie theater opened in May 2016, marking the end of the construction.
Location and Transportation
Vernon Hills is located less than 40 miles from Chicago and offers easy access to the city via the villages Metra stop, Vernon Hills station.
Recreation
The Vernon Hills Park District encompasses 427 acres, 5 facilities, 21 developed parks, 25 playgrounds and 38 athletic fields. It is committed to protecting the environment while showcasing nature's beauty in its parks.
The park district provides the community many recreational opportunities through Lakeview Fitness Center, summer camps, sports leagues for softball and kickball, and The Family Aquatic Center. They also hold special events throughout the year such as Little Bear Ribfest and free movie in Deerpath Park.
